A HISA Grant Bathroom for a U.S. Veteran

One thing that LiveWell loves to do and takes great pride in, is helping our veterans! LiveWell just recently finished up this bathroom remodel for a veteran who qualified for the HISA Grant. The grant allowed for us to completely remove the existing shower and build them a custom zero-entry, roll-in shower!

LiveWell demoed the existing shower and the surrounding wall panels. We removed the concrete foundation to lower the level of the shower floor so that it is slightly lower than the outside floor for proper drainage. We installed beautiful new tile floors and walls. Building out this shower allows for all tripping hazards to be removed and all barriers to entry are now gone. This shower will be safe for the veteran to use for many years to come!

What is the HISA grant you might ask?

The HISA Grant provides financial assistance to veterans for medically necessary home improvements and structural alterations. These changes are meant to facilitate easier access to and within the home, increase safety, and support the overall well-being of the veteran.

Unlike some other VA housing grants, the HISA Grant can be used for both service-connected and non-service-connected disabilities. This makes it unique and accessible to a broader group of veterans.

Who Is Eligible?

Veterans may be eligible for the HISA Grant if they:

  • Are enrolled in the VA health care system.

  • Have a medical need for home alterations as determined by a VA physician.

  • Have either a service-connected disability, or a non-service-connected disability with a condition that impacts daily living.

Eligibility is determined by the VA, and the grant amount depends on the nature of the disability.

Grant Amounts

As of current VA guidelines:

  • Veterans with service-connected disabilities may receive up to $6,800.

  • Veterans with non-service-connected disabilities may receive up to $2,000.

These are lifetime benefit caps, not annual limits.

What Can the Grant Be Used For?

The HISA Grant covers improvements that are medically necessary, such as:

  • Installation of ramps or wheelchair-accessible pathways.

  • Widening of doorways for wheelchair access.

  • Modifying bathrooms, such as installing walk-in showers or grab bars.

  • Lowering countertops or sinks for ease of use.

  • Improving entrance/exit pathways to the home.

It cannot be used for general home repairs or aesthetic changes.
